From Legacy Rails to PayFi: Why MeridianX × OSL Is Worth Watching

The aviation industry is becoming increasingly digital, but the financial infrastructure behind it still carries many legacy inefficiencies. Cross-border payments often involve multiple intermediaries, different currencies, fragmented banking systems, and lengthy settlement processes. For airlines, travel agencies, OTAs, and other participants across the supply chain, moving money can still be far more complicated than moving the underlying booking data.

This is why projects focused on the settlement layer are becoming more interesting to watch.

One of them is MeridianX, which is building an on-chain clearing layer for aviation finance. Instead of trying to replace existing airlines, travel platforms, or payment providers, MeridianX is focused on connecting aviation transactions with stablecoin settlement, payment instructions, settlement records, and protocol-level data.

Its recent cooperation with OSL adds an important piece to that infrastructure.

Through OSL’s regulated financial services, MeridianX can connect its aviation-focused clearing layer with fiat on/off-ramp, virtual accounts, collection and payout, and settlement capabilities. This creates a more practical bridge between stablecoin liquidity and the traditional banking rails that aviation businesses still depend on.

From a third-party perspective, the real value of the partnership is not simply about bringing “crypto payments” into aviation. The more meaningful opportunity is using regulated stablecoin infrastructure to reduce friction in cross-border settlement while keeping compliance and financial operations within established frameworks.

As PayFi and RWA gradually move from market narratives toward real commercial applications, collaborations like MeridianX × OSL are worth paying attention to. They show how blockchain infrastructure may be integrated into existing global industries in a more practical way—by improving the movement, settlement, and verification of value rather than trying to rebuild the entire industry from scratch.

Looking ahead, this model appears particularly promising if MeridianX can continue expanding real transaction volume, aviation-side adoption, and regulated financial connectivity. Aviation is a naturally global industry with constant cross-border settlement demand, which gives this type of infrastructure a clear real-world use case. If stablecoin-based settlement continues gaining institutional acceptance, MeridianX could be well positioned to become an important bridge between traditional aviation finance and the emerging PayFi economy.
